The Craft

How Batik Comes Alive

Each Chethi Batik piece journeys through detailed sacred stages — a meditative process unchanged for generations.

Preparation & Washing

Removing stiffness and starch from the fabric to prepare it for absorbing dyes perfectly.

Design Drawing

Drawing the intricate pattern onto the prepared fabric, serving as the blueprint for the artwork.

Wax Application

Applying molten wax to specific areas of the design where colors should not mix or penetrate.

Color Dyeing

Immersing the waxed fabric into the required dye solutions. (For multi-color creations, steps 3 and 4 are repeated).

Color Fixing

Treating the dyed fabric to secure and fix the colors, ensuring they remain vibrant and long-lasting.

Boiling & Wax Removal

Boiling the fabric in hot water to completely melt and remove the applied wax layers.

Deep Washing

Washing the fabric thoroughly to remove any excess dye and remaining wax residues.

Color Locking

Applying a specialized chemical treatment to ensure the dye becomes completely permanent and never fades over time.

Sun Drying

Drying the washed and treated fabric naturally in the warm Sri Lankan sun to complete the authentic creation.

Ironing & Finishing

Carefully steam ironing the intricately patterned fabric to give it a flawless, premium finish.
